A Better Way to Treat Chronic Pain

couple w outstretched arms

The CDC – Center for Disease Control finally issued guidelines to reign in the worst public health crisis in decades: the overuse of opioid medications with its serious and unwanted effects of addiction, suicide and death.  Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC stated, “It’s become increasingly clear that opioids carry substantial risk but only uncertain benefits – especially compared with other treatments for chronic pain.” … ” The vast majority of patients with chronic pain, the known, serious and far too often fatal risks far outweigh the transient benefits.”  Health Psychology Sacramento offers non-medication based treatments that are effective, restorative, and can last a lifetime.

Here is what treatment for chronic pain can look like:  After an initial assessment, a patient attends treatment 3-5 days per week for approximately 3 treatment sessions each on an outpatient basis.  This ensures that our patients learn how to regulate their pain utilizing cognitive behavioral approaches, relaxation and somatic release exercises, specific interventions to heal past trauma, massage therapy, nutrition for healing and health, and counseling to address conditions that have been caused by extended periods of pain: depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fractured relationships.  This approach allows patients to connect with their authentic selves, gradually reduce their pain, regain functioning capacity and reconnect to the meaning and future of their lives.  The average stay of a patient in our program is 3-4 months and most insurance carriers are supporting our programs.
