Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue

At this time, the causes for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia are poorly understood.  This can be an unnerving fact to the four million+ people in the United States who are believed to have these disorders. Some scientists have suggested that fibromyalgia is a central sensitization disorder, in which nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are either hyper-reactive or the inhibitory systems which temper the processing of pain signals are underactive.  In our experience, and those of many medical professionals, is that Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are similar disorders and probably related. Pain, fatigue and a host of other problems are seen in fibromyalgia. CFS displays similar symptoms. However, a practical way to differentiate the disorders is that pain is the predominant problem in people with fibromyalgia, whereas fatigue is to the major complaint in people with CFS.

Both conditions may be the effect of a patient having suffered years of pain, trauma and depression and finally the body manifesting symptoms of CFS and fibromyalgia as a result of these profound stressors.

Health Psychology Sacramento treats both conditions from a holistic perspective, utilizing nutritional changes to introduce an anti-inflammatory diet, mindfulness and somatic therapies to re-connect with the body in a healthful way, yoga therapy, trauma treatment with EMDR, massage, CBT for pain, CES alpha stim for the treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia and pain, and CAM – Complementary and Alternative Medicines.  Our interventions are designed to bring body and mind back into balance.
