Creating Harmony in Family Life 5

Happy Family Hugging Each OtherNo Tantrums – No Yelling – No Video Addiction

As parents, we want what’s best for our children.  Creating an atmosphere of respect and kindness in the family is not so easy.  The hectic school and work week plus balancing the needs of children and adults require an understanding and support that cannot be gleaned from reading books alone.  Even the most loving, skilled, and informed parent can feel overwhelmed and lost in how to support their child and balance the needs of everyone in the family.   Health Psychology Sacramento’s Parent Support Group is expertly guided by Kelly Pemberton*, school psychologist.  She provides the support, information, and resources you have been looking for.

Next meeting: Wed March 16th, 2016 from 3:30-5 pm

Emotional Regulation Activities for Your Child

Ž      Key Concepts & Strategies for this Wednesday’s Meeting:

  • ŽReview: Upstairs/Downstairs brain – connecting the stairway
  • Review: Right Brian/Left Brain – functioning from the whole brain
  • Emotional regulation activities help to connect the stairway, and put the “thinking lid” back on
  • Practice emotional regulation activities daily, so they become embedded – a habit
  • Identify friendly verbal and/or nonverbal cues to remind child to use strategies when dysregulation begins.
  • Model using emotional regulation activities – daily, and especially in moments of dysregulation
  • When your child is dysregulated, offer ideas, but do not demand or create a power struggle. If your child isn’t ready or able to use a strategy, model the strategy by using it yourself.
  • Use cues – verbal and nonverbal – to cue previously learned emotional regulation strategies
  • Practiced strategies that will work for your child and the situations you are struggling with
