Support Group for Parents with Special Needs Children

As a parent, you want what is best for your child. Knowing what your child needs is not so easy. Children with special learning needs, mental health challenges, or behavioral difficulties often require understanding and support that surpasses information found in most parenting books. Even the most loving, skilled, and informed parents can feel overwhelmed and lost in how to support their child. Health Psychology Sacramento’s Parent Support Group provides the support, information, and resources you are looking for.

Participants learn:

  • Parent Self-Care Learn how to care for yourself as a parent so you are able to care for your child. 
  • Identifying Your Parenting Strengths and Challenges Learn how to enhance your strengths and increase your skills.
  • Emotional Regulation Learn skills to manage the strong emotions parents often experience in response to challenging behavior. Learn how your emotional responses affect your child’s behavior. Learn ways to teach your child to manage his/her strong feelings.
  • Positive Behavior Supports Learn to understand, prevent, and manage behavioral challenges in ways that teach your child effective ways to get his/her needs met.
  • Gain Resources, Tools, Strategies The group uses reading materials, handouts, and therapist expertise to help parents develop skills. Topics include trauma, understanding specific learning and mental health disorders, brain development, stress management, working with schools, and more.
  • Parent Peer Support Gain support and insight from parents experiencing similar challenges. Learn how others have managed difficulties at home, with extended family and friends, and school. You are not alone.
