Reflections on the Season

Kristkendle

In December we celebrate the return of the Light that is born to humanity. The Light that gives hope in the midst of darkness, peace in the midst of war, and the ability to change and start over in each one of us.

This theme is manifested at the Winter Solstice: the darkest, longest night and shortest day of the year.  The sun seems to stay still for 6 days.  This moment of stillness marks the completion of the Earth’s annual inbreathing, beginning at midsummer.  Life in the northern hemisphere has withdrawn into the Earth: nature seems dead and darkness has reached its greatest potency.

But darkness can bring peace, and stillness calm. The pause between in-breath and out-breath is fleeting and full of potential and hope.  In that brief moment, the creative new is born and we celebrate the return of light, in nature.

On an inner level we celebrate the cyclic renewal of humanity and the renewal of our own soul.  We celebrate with each other in the light and warmth of good company, family and friends.  We thus strengthen the returning Light in each of us and gather the courage to move forward into the unknown future of the coming year.

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
