GI Problems Linked to Behavior Problems in Autism

The UC Davis MIND Institute in a large study (960 kids, 499 with autism) of 2-5 year old children.  Results based on parent reporting revealed the following:

- Children with autism were 6-8 times more likely to have frequent bloating, diarrhea, and food sensitivities as their neuro-typical counterparts.

- Children with autism and GI distress have more irritability, social withdrawal, repetitive behaviors and hyperactivity.

This study indirectly high-lightens and supports the necessity of Whole Child interventions; behavioral treatments alone are not enough in autism.  HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY Sacramento offers a comprehensive approach to the treatment of autism, that includes behavioral interventions, mood and anxiety concerns, stress sensitivity, digestive and dietary problems, including limited food choices, and the frequent lack of movement in the form of exercise.
